sqore.com - Aug 2015 - Present
Sqore is a web based service which connects international talent with opportunities via skill based competitions on Sqore's platform.
In my current role I'm part of a small design team consisting of a creative director, myself (UI designer) and a UX designer with whom I work with closely and interchangeably, in order to constantly improve and refine the platform, and to design and add new features.
At Sqore I am also solely responsible for the standalone competitions and platforms we create for some of our larger clients.

After 3 years of designing and managing projects for agencies, I wanted to gain more experience in the pitching and selecting of projects, managing the designer-client relationship fully, and to be able to spend more time developing my design practice.
I found my time working freelance hugely valuable in what it taught me about personal time management, flexibility (when switching between different projects and different areas of managing the business), decision making under pressure, communication skills and keeping the client involved and engaged throughout the design and development process.
I thoroughly enjoyed working independently, not only for the reasons mentioned above, but also because it gave me my first opportunity to work remotely. During my time as freelancer I had the chance to live in Amsterdam and London before heading to Stockholm.

Kaweb is a design agency located in Lichfield, UK. They work with a variety of clients, from blue chip companies to small businesses.
As lead web designer at Kaweb, my main responsibility moved away from a team management role, and back towards that of a designer; with responsibility to plan, produce and manage the design and development process for their web projects. Following from initial design, I would then code up the designs into HTML/CSS and pass over to the developers. Once at this stage I would then be responsible for following up the development to ensure the project was completed on time and to budget.
Having previously worked with relatively small brochure sites (5-15 wordpress pages), and tight deadlines; Kaweb offered me the opportunity to work with much larger sites and platforms which meant I was in the lucky position of working alongside some very talented developers - a process which I enjoy thoroughly.
Joe is a dedicated designer who works well within a team environment to get the job done. His overall knowledge of website interfaces allows him to design stuff that actually works and has a keen eye for detail.Paul Ingram - MD @ Kaweb
creare.co.uk - Jan 2010 - Aug 2011
I was able to progress quickly at Creare and became team leader after a year of employment. Within this role it was my responsibility to manage and mentor a creative team of 2 Junior designers alongside another team leader and their junior designers.
Within this role I was responsible for my teams design, branding and online marketing, and also ensuring that we worked closely to ensure technical feasibility and correct design implementation of web and SEO standards.
Since this was a such a fast paced and competitive company, a large part of my role was also about reaching, maintaining and presenting team turnover targets.
Whilst this was something that I didn’t find particularly enjoyable at the time, the experience set me in good stead for my future as a freelancer, where I felt much more adept at dealing with clients and their money!
"Joe consistently demonstrated his understanding of user experience, commercial awareness and ability to interpret a brief. These skills complimented his outstanding design ability and style making him an accomplished designer and an important asset to our team."Nick Rinylo - COO @ Creare

Creare are a Web/SEO company based in Rugby, UK. They specialize in providing the full digital service to small and medium businesses.
Coming straight from university into a fast paced design company was tough and came with a steep learning curve. I had never spoken to a client on the phone before!. I quickly got up to speed with working in a competitive environment, producing sites for clients from lots of different sectors, from pest control to driving instructors. While not the sexiest of subject matter I learned a lot of valuable skills whilst in this role; client communication skills and how to produce quality design work to tight deadlines.

Outside of my work I love being outdoors; particularly hiking, camping, and climbing; and I feel strongly that time away from the screen helps my state of mind and the quality of my work.
This summer I was able to complete the South West coast path hike, a 1000km thru hike along the British south coast, which is something I've always wanted to do and really enjoyed.
I also really enjoy physical training and I am currently into rock climbing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Gymnastics Strength training and Handbalancing. When indoors, I love listening to music, crafting playlists, reading, and I can cook a mean Sunday roast!
